Following several months of successful beta testing at sites in both Europe and the U.S., worldwide commercial shipments of the new SMART Jet Expedio™ wide-format UV inkjet production printers recently commenced. This exceptionally versatile machine, which we previewed at several industry events during 2004, is a new 5-meter/16-foot superwide inkjet production printer that uses UV-curable inks. What’s so special about the new SMART Jet Expedio™?
It represents a real breakthrough in terms of speed, quality, environmental friendliness, superwide format versatility, and ability to print on virtually any media. In fact, we believe it has the potential to revolutionize the wide-format inkjet production printing marketplace.
It can print 8-color, 720 dpi, high quality indoor signage for close-up viewing, as well as billboards and other superwide applications at super-fast speeds up to 150 square meters per hour and its multi-roll printing capability even further increases productivity.
And its use of UV-curable inks eliminates the need for costly solvent disposal equipment and addresses the requirements of environmental regulations imposed in some areas.
This means it does not require expensive, specially coated substrates for good ink adhesion.
During beta testing, SMART Jet Expedio™ customers were producing sellable prints off the machine in as little as three days after installation. The machines have beenrunning exceptionally reliably since then and they were being used for full-time production printing during the beta test phase.
Beta testing also verified the full versatility of the machine, with customers printing jobs on a variety of media types including PVC, paper, mesh and other specialty media. The beta test sites also took full advantage of the productivity SMART Jet Expedio™ 5000 offers by printing jobs of sellable quality at speeds up to 150 square meters per hour.
Among the jobs produced during the beta test phase are many large-scale outdoor applications that leverage the machine’s 5-meter/16 ft.-wide format.
Gescom in Italy produced a large building wrap installed in Rome during its testing period, and Maserdotti, also in Italy, has been printing jobs on flex PVC and mesh at a volume of approximately 3,000 square meters per week, mostly in 4-colors at speeds 105 square meters per hour, including banners and a grand format indoor application job for Nike.
Today, we’re printing between 12,000 and 14,000 square meters of output a month with SMART Jet Expedio™.”

Momentum builds behind new SMART Jet Expedio™
Momentum continues to build fast behind the new SMART Jet Expedio™ 5000 wide-format UV inkjet production printers.
In response to strong demand for the machine - a trend we expect to continue - we have opened a new production facility for the SMART Jet Expedio™ to increase our production capacity. The new 7,750 square foot (720 square meters) manufacturing facility is located in the same industrial park in West Vancouver, Canada, as are our SMART Jet HiQ+® ,UV Pro™, and HiQ™ assembly lines. This gives us a total of 33,300 square feet (3,100 square meters) for wide-format printer production.
Our production capacity for the new SMART Jet Expedio™ line is approximately 20 machines per quarter. We're building units now and we'll be ready once beta testing is concluded towards the end of 2004.
Beta testing of the machine in the field continues to progress well. There are two beta machines installed and running in Europe. And recently, the first beta machine in the U.S. was installed at Best Buy Banner of Riverside, California.
Best Buy Banner has long been a pioneer, delivering innovative new products to the wholesale sign community for over two decades. The company provides print production and fabrication of a wide range of applications including banners, backdrops, bus and vehicle wraps, wall murals and pole banners. And it was one of the first companies in the U.S. to purchase the SMART Jet UV Pro™ flatbed inkjet press.
With business continuing to grow, Best Buy Banner turned to GSS INTERNATIONAL again for another printer with which to expand its production capacity.
Says Kriese, "We're always looking to go after new markets. We wanted a machine that could handle fabrics so we could get into outdoor banners and fabric applications. Even though the SMART Jet Expedio™ is a superwide, 16-foot printer, its speed, quality, and versatility make it so much more than just a billboard printer. It uses UV-curable inks and can print very large banners for outdoor applications - work we would otherwise have had to produce on a screen press."

Beta testing of SMART Jet Expedio™ has begun ...
Beta testing for the exciting new SMART Jet Expedio™ 5000 superwide UV inkjet press began last month at Gescom S.p.A of Viterbo, Italy. The beta test phase for the new machine is expected to last from three to five months with commercial shipments planned to commence towards the end of this year.
Gescom has a longstanding relationship with GSS INTERNATIONAL LLC. The company served as a beta test site for the SMART Jet UV Pro™ flatbed inkjet press last year and also operates seven SMART Jet HiQ+® production presses and three SMART Jet UV Pro flatbed presses. The company's expertise ranges from point-of-sale banners, self-adhesive vinyl signage and vehicle wraps, to mesh wraps for building sites and a growing business in exhibition graphics.
Says Sandra Paolucci, managing director at Gescom, "a strong belief in the future of UV-curable inks printing technology for both roll-to-roll and flatbed printing applications" was behind the company's addition of the SMART Jet Expedio™ to its equipment roster.

The SMART Jet Expedio™ is GSS’s new super-wide, super-fast, UV-curable press.
It is a revolutionary 16 ft. (5m), 8-colors, UV roll-fed printer able at outputting both photo-realistic images for close-viewed applications and Blueboard-like outdoor applications at super fast printing modes.
The SMART Jet Expedio™ is able to print simultaneously on up to three different rolls of substrates.
This feature contributes greatly to the versatility of the machine allowing better production planning and maximized capacity utilization.
